I have political views and I’m not shy about expressing them, but this is not the place.
This is about sellers marketing their homes in a presidential election year, particularly this hyper-polarized election year.
I’ve brought potential buyers to homes with big campaign signs in the yard, in the window, on the barn. One sign took up an entire side of the barn and featured flags waving as well. The buyers were clearly uncomfortable. On at least one occasion, they simply walked away without looking inside.
Renters are even more uncomfortable if their political views don’t align with a property owner who displays strong political preferences. After all, they’re going to have a long term relationship with this person.
I’m not asking property owners to hide their political preference, but if a sale is what they want, a home should say “welcome” to everyone. Maybe one ordinary yard sign is enough?
2020 has been a tough year for all of us. Please tread lightly.
